Kemba Earle's profile

Black cultural Archives 40 Years

Black Cultural Archives is a heritage museum in Brixton that showcases the history of Black British culture. In 2022, the museum celebrated its 40th anniversary, and I was commissioned to design a logo for the event. The logo was used on various campaigns throughout the year and applied to merchandise and event graphics for the main celebration.
Mood board of visual research
I conducted visual research and explored themes including Black Power and Afrocentrism, the aesthetics of Brixton, and 80s graphics.
Initial design sketches
Early design concepts
I created some design concepts from my rough sketches, experimenting with patterns adapted from the existing BCA logo
Experimenting with fonts
Exploring design routes
Development and refinement of three design routes to provide options for the client, who selected option 4.
Refined logo design chosen by client
The final result is visually striking and memorable, encapsulating a tribute to the history of BCA. The design was well-received by both the client and the audience, who praised the bold, geometric style and Afrocentric colour scheme.

The design was effective when applied to all collateral, including the museum vinyl window display, event merchandise, banners, and social media.
